Length at birth z-score is inversely associated with an increased risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia or death in preterm infants born before 32 gestational weeks: A nationwide cohort study

PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Jun 05, 2019

Jung YH, et al. - Researchers examined investigated how the risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants is correlated to the extent of fetal growth restriction in terms of not only birth weight but length and head circumference at birth. From the Korean Neonatal Network (KNN) database, they analyzed a total of 4,662 very low birth weight (VLBW) infants following the exclusion and inclusion criteria. Death was reported for 518 infants before 36 postmenstrual weeks; BPD developed in 1,388 infants. Outcomes revealed an inverse correlation of length at birth with an increased risk of BPD or death in VLBW infants born earlier than 32 weeks of gestation.
