Left atrial strain associated with functional recovery in patients receiving optimal treatment for heart failure

Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography Apr 14, 2021

Torii Y, Kusunose K, Hirata Y, et al. - Given that a better prognosis in HF (heart failure) with recovered ejection fraction (HFrecEF) vs HF with reduced EF (HFrEF) has been shown in various previous studies, researchers herein investigated if left atrial (LA) strain could aid in the detection of patients with recovered EF among cases of HF with low EF on admission. Participants were 100 consecutive patients hospitalized for the first time because of new-onset HF. Patients received a clinical diagnosis of HFrEF on admission (left ventricular ejection fraction <40%) and received optimal treatment for HF. LA strain at a cutoff value of 10.8% conferred a high sensitivity (96%) and specificity (82%) for detecting HFrecEF in HF patients presenting with low EF on admission. Overall, experts suggest the usefulness of LA strain as an indicator to predict HFrecEF and advise considering it as a routine measurement in patients with HFrEF on admission.
