Learning curve of liver stiffness measurement using a new hybrid machine composed of transient elastography interfaced with ultrasound
European Radiology Oct 20, 2019
Cassinotto C, Pierredon-Foulongne MA, Belgour A, et al. - Ten novice operators who had never done transient elastography (TE) measurements were prospectively assessed from April to October 2018 in order to evaluate the learning curve for doing reliable liver stiffness measurements using a new hybrid machine composed of TE interfaced with an ultrasound device for radiographers and radiologists with various levels of expertise in ultrasound imaging. The rates of failures were of 4.2%, 2.4%, 47.6%, and 45.8%, of measurements, poorly reliable, reliable, and very reliable outcomes, respectively. Amongst all the subgroups, the rates of reliable plus very reliable outcomes were outstanding, varying from 91 to 96%. Between operator subgroups and particularly between junior radiologists, senior radiologists, and radiographers, the rates of very reliable, reliable, and unreliable outcomes did not vary. In the interquartile range/median values over time, no breaking point was noted. Hence, no learning curve impact is exhibited by TE interfaced with ultrasound in this hybrid machine. Nevertheless, following a short beginning training session, a neophyte observer is able to perform high rates of reliant and very reliant TE measurements.
