Learning curve of high-complexity surgery for advanced ovarian cancer
Gynecologic Oncology Nov 25, 2019
Nishikimi K, et al. - In this inquiry of consecutive patients (n = 271) with ovarian, fallopian tube, and peritoneal carcinoma undergoing cytoreductive surgery for stage III/IV disease, researchers explored the learning curve for a monodisciplinary surgical team including gynecologic oncologists conducting cytoreductive surgery for advanced ovarian cancer, including high-complexity procedures with bowel resection and upper abdominal surgery. Findings revealed the attainment of proficiency in performing high-complexity surgery after almost 50 cases, and compared with the number of cases needed to perform moderate-complexity surgery, this number was found to be greater. They identified acceptable rates of severe perioperative complications even during the initial learning period in cases of high-complexity surgery.
