Learner driver experience and teenagers’ crash risk during the first year of independent driving
JAMA Apr 09, 2020
Ehsani JP, et al. - Researchers sought to ascertain how learner driver experience was linked with crash risk during the first year of independent driving. Vehicles of youth aged 15.5 to 16.1 years at recruitment were instrumented with sensors, and record of driving was made during the learner period through 1 year of independent driving. Collection of data was done in southwestern Virginia from January 2011 through August 2014. This cohort study involved 90 families; significantly less crashes were reported during the first year of driving for teenagers who practiced consistently and had lower abrupt maneuvering rates during the learner period. Per this analysis, parents should encourage regular practice and discourage driving behaviors that result in abrupt maneuvers to decrease teenagers’ crash risk during the first year of independent driving.
