Lean tissue deficit in preterm infants persists up to 4 months of age: Results from a Swedish longitudinal study

Chmielewska A, et al. - In this Swedish longitudinal study, experts prospectively enrolled 33 preterm infants and 69 term controls and were followed up to 4 months of age in order to determine whether the variations in body composition continued in later age. At 4 months corrected age, they discovered that in comparison to term controls, preterm infants were both lighter and shorter. The absolute fat-free mass deficiency continued until this age. Moreover, a small influence of nutrition on body composition was seen.
