“T2-hypointense dot sign”: A novel and highly suggestive clue for the diagnosis of ovarian torsion
Clinical Imaging Mar 30, 2019
Bekci T, et al. - In this investigation, researchers characterized “T2-hypointense dot sign” for the diagnosis of ovarian torsion and compared its diagnostic capability with whirlpool sign. Pelvic MRIs were used for the analysis of 31 patients with surgically proven ovarian torsion. The control group consisted of 30 adnexal neoplasm patients and 15 tubo-ovarian abscess patients. Two independent radiologists used a three-point scale to evaluate the MRIs of all 76 patients for the presence of T2-hypointense dot sign and whirlpool sign. In patients with adnexal neoplasm and tubo-ovarian abscess, both signs were definitely negative. A valuable clue for accurate and early diagnosis of ovarian torsion in non-contrast MRI scans could be the presence of T2-hypointense dot sign.
