LDL cholesterol rises with BMI only in lean individuals: Cross-sectional U.S. and Spanish representative data
Diabetes Care Aug 05, 2018
Laclaustra M, et al. - In the present study, researchers evaluated the dose-response relationship between BMI or waist circumference (WC) and LDL cholesterol (LDLc), as well as its connection to metabolic impairment. For this investigation, they cross-sectionally examined participants in the Continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 1999–2010) and the Study on Nutrition and Cardiovascular Risk (ENRICA, 2008–2010). Findings revealed inverted U-shaped relationships between BMI and WC and LDLc. Weakening relationships between BMI and LDLc might designate metabolic impairment resulting from aging or other metabolic diseases. Results of this study suggested that small weight losses might help to lower LDLc in lean individuals.
