Later puberty onset among chronically undernourished adolescents living in a Karachi slum, Pakistan
Acta Pediatrica Oct 18, 2019
Campisi SC, et al. - Among adolescents living in an urban slum in Karachi, Pakistan, researchers evaluated factors correlated with the timing of puberty onset (Tanner Stage Breast 2/Genitals 2). From 2006 to 2010, girls recruited at 8-10 years (n = 1,009) and boys 9-11 years (n = 863) were followed every 6 months. They used parametric survival analysis for interval censored data to estimate median age at puberty onset and evaluate the connection between exposures and timing of puberty onset. Data reported that the overall median age at Tanner Stage Breast 2 was 10.1 years and the median age at Tanner Stage Genital 2 (AAG2) was 10.1 years. According to results, stunting and highly prevalent anemia delayed AAG2 among adolescents living in the Karachi slum while stunting, thinness, and vitamin A deficiency delayed AAG2. Findings suggested no significant association of parental and household factors with the timing of puberty onset.
