Latent Toxoplasma gondii infection is associated with decreased serum triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio in male patients with schizophrenia
Comprehensive Psychiatry Feb 22, 2018
Sagud M, et al. - In view of the common occurrence of both Toxoplasma gondii (TG) infection and metabolic disturbances in patients with schizophrenia, researchers sought for the association between TG seropositivity, serum lipid levels, body mass index (BMI) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in male inpatients with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia patients showed 52.38% TG seropositivity rate and 17% prevalence of MetS. Nominally lower triglycerides and body weight were evident among TG seropositive patients. Findings revealed a significant association between TG infection and decreased triglyceride/ high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio in a sample of carefully selected men with chronic schizophrenia.
