Latent class analysis of self-reported substance use during incarceration: Gender differences and associations with emotional distress and aggressiveness

Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment Aug 03, 2021

Caravaca-Sánchez F, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the prevalence and patterns of substance use during incarceration, as well as examined comparative substance use patterns by gender. Incarcerated men and women commonly report substance use, with tobacco, cannabis, and sedatives being most prevalent. Performing latent class analysis (LCA) using data drawn from six prisons in Spain [men (n = 1,118) and women (n = 207)], they identified different patterns of substance use by gender. High depressant use membership for men and high polydrug use for women were observed in correlation with presence of aggressiveness. Person-centered and gender-focused approaches should be employed in interventions during incarceration.
