Laryngeal dysfunction in severe asthma: A cross sectional observational study
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Oct 07, 2020
Vertigan AE, et al. - Researchers undertook this cross sectional observational analysis to analyze laryngeal function in patients suffering from severe asthma. Herein, laryngeal function in patients with severe asthma (n = 53) was compared with patients experiencing laryngeal disorders of vocal cord dysfunction/inducible laryngeal obstruction (n = 16) and muscle tension dysphonia (n = 14), and also with healthy controls (n = 13). Thereafter, including 11 participants experiencing severe asthma and laryngeal dysfunction, a pre-post pilot study of speech pathology intervention for laryngeal symptoms was conducted. According to the findings, patients with severe asthma commonly suffered from laryngeal dysfunction, which impacted respiration and phonation in these patients. To attenuate the effect of laryngeal dysfunction on asthma symptoms, identification as well as treatment is necessary.
