Large-scale assessment of needs in low vision individuals using the Aira assistive technology
Clinical Ophthalmology Sep 29, 2019
Nguyen BJ, Chen WS, Chen AJ, et al. - Researchers used call data from the Aira (Aira Tech Corporation, La Jolla, CA, USA) system to systematically examine the needs of low vision people by performing Chi-square tests, t-tests, ANOVA, linear regression and Poisson regression analyses. Over 3 months, 878 subscribers placed 10,022 total calls. Reading, navigation, and home management were the most common categories. Gender and vision status significantly differed in the distribution of call types, duration, and time of call. Users of blind and light perception had higher usage rates than low vision users. Women had higher rates of usage than men. This large-scale needs analysis of low vision people offers insight into usage patterns across different levels of vision loss and gender, which will guide future developments in assistive technology by tailoring future hardware and software upgrades.
