Laparotomy in women with severe acute maternal morbidity: Secondary analysis of a nationwide cohort study

Witteveen T, et al. - Researchers planned this study to assess the national incidence rates for postpartum laparotomy related to severe acute maternal morbidity (SAMM) in a high-income country. In addition, they tested the hypothesis that risk of postpartum laparotomy differs by mode of birth. In this study, they recognized a small risk of postpartum laparotomy related to SAMM. However, women who gave birth by cesarean section demonstrated a considerably higher risk of laparotomy. They recommended considering the findings in counseling and clinical decision making.
