Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy resolves NAFLD: Another formal indication for bariatric surgery?
Obesity Surgery Aug 23, 2018
Esquivel CM, et al. - Researchers aimed at evaluating the evolution of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in patients with obesity after 1 year of SG. They performed intraoperative liver biopsy in 63 obese patients who underwent SG from January 2009 to December 2013. One year after surgery, they biopsied 43 patients again. All the patients showed reversal or reduction of the stage of steatosis or steatohepatitis at 12 months after surgery. This suggests the efficacy of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in managing NAFLD and preventing its progression into cirrhosis. Patients with obesity and metabolic syndrome can undergo SG, with NAFLD showing satisfactory results 12 months after surgery. They realized NAFLD a formal indication for bariatric surgery.
