Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for adolescents under 18 years old with severe obesity
Obesity Surgery Sep 20, 2019
Lainas P, et al. - Researchers sought to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) for patients strictly under 18 years old with severe obesity. They retrospectively analyzed prospectively collected data of 84 patients who were undergoing LSG and were under 18 years old (range: 15–17 years). The patients had a median weight of 128 kg and median BMI of 43.7 kg/m2; median duration of surgery was 68.5 min. Outcomes establish that for patients under 18 years old, LSG is safe and effective. The procedure results in significant weight loss, comorbidity remission, and quality of life improvement in these patients. They identify the essentiality of careful patient selection after adequate risk vs benefit evaluation by an expert multidisciplinary team.
