Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication controls reflux symptoms and improves disease-specific quality of life in patients with class I and II obesity
Surgery Aug 26, 2017
Martin Del Campo SE et al. – This study evaluated early efficacy of laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication in patients with class I and II obesity. The authors concluded that laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication is a viable surgical option for patients with class I and II obesity as it provides similar symptom control and quality of life in nonobese and class I and II obese patients after 18 months of operation.
Methods
- Data were collected prospectively from 76 nonobese, 53 class I obese, and 47 class II obese patients who underwent laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication between 2009 and 2014.
Results
- Six weeks after operation, gastroesophageal reflux symptom scale scores decreased significantly from 35.5 to 6.5, from 37.0 to 4.0, and from 45.0 to 9.0 in nonobese, class I obese, and class II obese groups, respectively.
- Scores remained improved after 18 months.
- Similar trend was seen in gastroesophageal reflux disease–health–related quality of life scores.
- Overall, 86%, 83%, and 79% of patients, respectively, in the 3 groups did not take proton–pump inhibitors.
