Laparoscopic major vascular injuries in gynecologic surgery for benign indications: A systematic review
Obstetrics and Gynecology Feb 24, 2021
King NR, Lin E, Yeh C, et al. - Researchers conducted a systematic review of PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrials.gov, and MEDLINE with the aim to determine the incidence, location, etiology, and mortality of major vascular injuries in gynecologic laparoscopy for benign indications. They screened 1,097 studies for inclusion with reviewing 147 full-text articles. Inclusion criteria were met by 66 studies published between 1978 and 2016, representing 197,062 surgeries. Findings from this review suggested a very low incidence of major vascular injury during gynecologic laparoscopy, and indicated that the vast majority of injuries did not result in death. For managing benign gynecologic disease, laparoscopy remains a safe surgical approach in relation to vascular injuries.
