Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair in women: Trends, disparities, and postoperative outcomes
American Journal of Surgery Jul 27, 2019
Ilonzo N, et al. - Trends in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair over time, rates of laparoscopic repair in women, and subsequent postoperative outcomes were determined via analyzing data for 237,503 patients undergoing repair of an initial, reducible inguinal hernia using the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database for years 2006 to 2017. Outcomes revealed that laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgeries have increased, from 20.49% in 2006 to 36.36% in 2017. Compared to men, women with bilateral inguinal hernias more frequently underwent open rather than laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. Overall low postoperative complications were noted.
