Laparoscopic hysterectomy has fewer complications than abdominal hysterectomy regardless of uterine weight: A nationwide cohort study
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Feb 21, 2018
Louie M, et al. - An investigation was performed to assess the association between uterine weight and postoperative outcomes following hysterectomy, stratified by surgical approach. Findings revealed an independent association of increasing uterine weight with greater odds of complications. Compared to abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy, the laparoscopic approach was shown to have the lowest odds of complications even for uteri >500 grams. Thus they recommended considering pathways for preferential referral to laparoscopic specialists especially for patients with enlarged uteri to optimize postoperative outcomes.
