Knee osteoarthritis, potential mediators, and risk of all-cause mortality: Data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative
Arthritis Care & Research Jan 27, 2020
Wang Y, Nguyen USDT, Lane NE, et al. - Utilizing a multivariable Cox-proportional model, researchers sought to evaluate the relation of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA), knee pain, and radiographic knee OA to all-cause mortality and discover mediators in the causal pathway. Study participants were divided into four groups: symptomatic knee OA (ie, both radiographic knee OA [Kellgren and Lawrence grade ≥ 2] and knee pain); knee pain only; radiographic knee OA only; and neither radiographic knee OA nor knee pain. Of the 4,796 candidates, 282 died over a follow-up duration of 96 months. According to findings, candidates with either symptomatic or radiographic knee OA had an elevated risk of mortality of all causes. Increased mortality risk from symptomatic knee OA has been partly mediated by its impact on the disability and physical of QoL. No apparent mediation impact was found by either MCS of QoL or oral pain-relief medications (ie, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and opioids) use.
