Knee disarticulations vs transfemoral amputations: Functional outcomes
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma May 31, 2019
Polfer EM, et al. - Among 10 knee disarticulation (KD) patients and 18 transfemoral amputation (TFA) matched controls, researchers determined whether there is a functional difference reported by the patient between combat-related KDs and TFAs. In order to participate in a retrospective functional cohort analysis, they identified and contacted all KDs and TFAs performed at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and National Naval Medical Center from January 2003 to July 2012. Between KDs and TFAs, no functional differences measured on the Prosthetic Evaluation Questionnaire, Lower Limb Outcome Questionnaire, SF-36, and Tegner Activity Scale scores were detected. They advocate performing trauma-related amputations at the most distal level the osseous and soft tissue injuries permit in the absence of a proven functional difference.
