Knee alignment is quantitatively related to periarticular bone morphometry and density, especially in those with osteoarthritis
Arthritis & Rheumatism Sep 25, 2017
Lo GH, et al. - A cross-sectional investigation was done to assess the connection of periarticular trabecular morphology and bone mineral density (BMD) with knee alignment. It was concluded that the static alignment was related to medial: lateral paBMD in all knees; and with medial paBMD and trabecular morphometry in osteoarthritis (OA) knees only. Aberrant knee loading may lead to increased relative subchondral bone density, partly associated with higher bone volume fraction, the number of thicker trabeculae with smaller inter-trabecular spacing. Knee dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) could be a valuable early biomarker for knee OA.
