Ketonuria is not associated with hyperemesis gravidarum disease severity
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Aug 29, 2020
Koot MH, Grooten IH, vd Post JAM, et al. - In order to determine the correlation between ketonuria and hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) disease severity, researchers assessed pregnant women hospitalized for HG from the Maternal and Offspring outcomes after Treatment of HyperEmesis by Refeeding (MOTHER) trial and approached women hospitalized for HG in 19 hospitals in the Netherlands, for study participation. They performed inclusion of 215 women. Findings revealed no correlation between the degree of ketonuria at admission and severity of symptoms, quality of life, maternal weight loss, or number of readmissions. This suggests that ketonuria yields no information concerning disease severity or disease course. Despite this, longer hospitalization was reported among women with a higher degree of ketonuria at admission possibly indicating health care professionals base length of hospital stay on the degree of ketonuria. The lack of correlation between ketonuria and disease severity implies no additional value of ketonuria in the clinical management of HG.
