Juvenile recurrent parotitis: A systematic review of treatment studies
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Jul 11, 2018
Garavello W, et al. - Researchers undertook a systematic review of the literature with the aim to identify and discuss the treatment options emerged over the last 28 years in order to prevent recurrent episodes of parotitis. they included 24 studies which deferred widely regarding the definitions used for juvenile recurrent parotitis. They identified only 1 randomized controlled trial indicating marked benefits with the use of Bear Bile and Huangqi, two traditional Chinese medicines. Vast majority (n = 19) of the selected studies reported on sialendoscopy, and documented improvement of the condition following this intervention. However, the scarcity of randomized controlled trials, the heterogeneity of the definitions used and the high rate of spontaneous resolution make the available evidence weak and difficult to be interpreted.
