IV vs oral acetaminophen as a component of multimodal analgesia after total hip arthroplasty: A randomized, blinded trial

Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 14, 2019

Westrich GH, et al. - In this double-blinded, randomized controlled trial, 154 subjects with total hip arthroplasty (THA) were estimated to analyze the effectiveness of intravenous (IV) administration of acetaminophen. All the candidates were given either IV or oral acetaminophen as part of a comprehensive opioid-sparing multimodal analgesia strategy. They included pain with physical therapy on postoperative day (POD) 1, opioid side-effects (POD 1), and cumulative opioid use under primary outcomes. They observed similar low pain scores, minimal opioid side effects, and limited opioid usage in both the groups (corresponding to 6 doses of tramadol 100mg over 3 days). Hence, they suggested multimodal analgesia as an efficient scheme to control pain for THA.
