Isotretinoin and risk factors for suicide attempt: A population-based comprehensive case series and nested case–control study using 2010–2014 French Health Insurance Data
Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Dec 05, 2019
Droitcourt C, Poizeau F, Kerbrat S, et al. - In this nationwide, population-based, case-control study, researchers reported patient profiles and the management of isotretinoin among patients who committed or attempted suicide under treatment, as well as evaluated the risk factors for suicide attempts (SA) under isotretinoin. In total, 328,018 individuals between 10 and 50 years of age had started a course of isotretinoin between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2014. A dermatologist's initiation of treatment was inversely related to the continuation of treatment after a SA. Suicide attempts under isotretinoin are rare events, and the findings suggest that at the time of initiation of treatment, most of the patients concerned have a risk-prone profile detectable. Continuing isotretinoin's risk-benefit ratio after SA requires more careful consideration.
