Isolating the impact of specific gambling activities and modes on problem gambling and psychological distress in internet gamblers
BMC Public Health Nov 07, 2019
Gainsbury SM, et al. - Focusing on past-month internet gamblers, researchers undertook this inquiry to isolate the link between specific gambling activities and modalities (internet and venue/land-based) to gambling disorder and general psychological distress. They conducted an online survey assessing self-reported gambling participation, problem gambling severity, and psychological distress among Australians who had gambled online in the previous 30 days (N = 998, 57% male). Findings revealed a strong link of online and land-based electronic gaming machines (EGMs) with gambling disorder severity among internet gamblers. Gambling-related harms were essentially predicted by high overall gambling engagement. To address gambling-associated harms and psychological distress among gamblers, specific attention on venue-based EGMs, sports betting and casinos is justified. Findings offer further insight into how specific gambling activities are related to disordered gambling and psychological distress in users of internet gambling services.
