Isolated ascending aorta dilatation is associated with increased risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm

Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery Apr 28, 2021

Gallego-Colon E, Yosefy C, Cherniavsky E, et al. - Researchers undertook this retrospective analysis to determine essential 2-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography (2D-TTE) aortic indices related to abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) as predictive tools for undiagnosed AAA. They assessed size of the ascending aorta in cases without recognized valvular diseases or hemodynamic compromise as predictive instrument for undiagnosed AAA. Using 2D-TTE, they examined the tubular ascending aorta of 170 patients. Findings demonstrated an association of an increased tubular ascending aortic diameter, measured by 2D-TTE, with AAA presence. Seemingly, routine 2D-TTE screening for silent AAA via ascending aorta analysis may be beneficial particularly in older patients who have a dilated tubular ascending aorta (≥ 33 mm).
