Islet autoantibody typesmark differential clinical characteristics at diagnosis of pediatric type 1 diabetes
Pediatric Diabetes May 28, 2021
Nieto J, Castillo B, Astudillo M, et al. - This study was undertaken to investigate if islet autoantibody type marks differential characteristics at the time of type 1 diabetes (T1D) diagnosis. Researchers examined 711 children with newly diagnosed autoimmune T1D comparing demographic (gender, age, race/ethnicity), clinical (pubertal development, BMI percentile, diabetic ketoacidosis) and laboratory (glucose, hemoglobin A1c, C-peptide, tissue transglutaminase antibodies, thyroglobulin antibodies, and thyroid peroxidase antibodies) characteristics by presence/absence of autoantibodies to insulin (IAA), GAD65 (GADA)or IA-2/ICA512 (IA-2A). It was shown that islet autoantibody type is correlated with differential characteristics at diagnosis of pediatric T1D. There is a need for longitudinal and mechanistic studies to explore T1D endotypes by autoantibody type.
