Ischemic vascular disease and long‐term mortality in emergency abdominal surgical patients: A population‐based cohort study
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica May 13, 2021
Tvarnø CD, Lohse N, Møller MH, et al. - Among patients receiving emergency abdominal surgery, this inquiry was conducted to assess the link between co‐existing ischemic vascular disease (IVD) and long‐term mortality. Mortality within eight years (primary outcome) as well as within 30 days (secondary outcome) were assessed among 4,864 patients. Within eight years, deaths of 2584 (53.7%) patients were reported. Preoperative IVD was present in some 20.9% (1019/4864). Findings revealed that preoperative IVD was prevalent among adult major emergency abdominal surgical patients and was shown to be related to a 10% relative increment in long‐term mortality, but not in short‐term mortality.
