Ischemic stroke in giant-cell arteritis: French retrospective study
Journal of Autoimmunity Feb 11, 2019
Pariente A, et al. - Researchers conducted a multicentric retrospective analysis on 129 patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA) to examine the prevalence of GCA-related stroke, the overall survival, and the relapse-free survival in patients with GCA. They noted ischemic stroke in 16% of GCA patients, which can occur concomitantly to GCA diagnosis. GCA patients who suffered ischemic stroke tended to be older males. Compared to patients without stroke, patients with stroke showed anterior ischemic optic neuropathy more frequently, had significantly lower overall survival and 3-years relapse-free survival, and had decreased time with sustained remission.
