Ischemic stroke in adults with congenital heart disease: A population-based cohort study
Journal of the American Heart Association Jul 25, 2019
Pedersen MGB, et al. - Researchers used Danish nationwide registries to estimate ischemic stroke risk and 30-day post-stroke mortality in congenital heart disease (CHD) adults vs the general population. Overall 16,836 adults with CHD (aged ≥18 years) were identified and they were sex and birth year-matched 1:10 to a general population comparison cohort. At age 60 years, the estimated risk for ischemic stroke was 7.4% and 2.9% in the CHD cohort and in the general population cohort, respectively. Findings revealed an increased risk of ischemic stroke in both younger and older CHD adults. Data also showed that 7.4% of CHD adults will have had an ischemic stroke by 60 years of age. CHD adults vs the general population experienced increased post-stroke mortality.
