Isavuconazole as successful salvage therapy for mucormycosis in pediatric patients
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Apr 11, 2020
Ashkenazi-Hoffnung L, Bilavsky E, Levy I, et al. - Researchers investigated the efficacy of Isavuconazole in treatment of children with mucormycosis, a rare but life-threatening fungal disease. The demographic and clinical data of pediatric patients with proven mucormycosis who were treated with isavuconazole in 2015 to 2019 were collected. At 2 centers, four children of (three with underlying hematologic malignancies, and 1 with sustained major trauma; median age: 10.5 years) received isavuconazole as salvage therapy. Complete clinical, radiological and mycological responses were documented in all patients following treatment and surgical intervention. A literature review revealed successful treatment with isavuconazole, as salvage therapy, in majority of 8 children with mucormycosis. Outcomes thereby support isavuconazole as a valuable salvage therapy in pediatric mucormycosis.
