Is transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) effective for the treatment of pain in fibromyalgia? A systematic review and meta-analysis
The Journal of Pain Jan 29, 2020
Lloyd DM, et al. - Via performing this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers sought to ascertain the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a neuromodulation technique that targets the CNS, on pain intensity in fibromyalgia. Inclusion of 14 clinical studies (ten controlled trials and four within-individuals crossover studies) was done. Eight controlled trials yielded tentative evidence supporting active tDCS as effective for pain reduction compared with sham. tDCS is identified as a safe intervention with the potential to reduce pain intensity in fibromyalgia. However, more empirical analysis of the neural target sites and optimum stimulation parameters is required in order to produce the greatest effects before undertaking further clinical studies.
