Is tranexamic acid associated with mortality or multiple organ failure following severe injury?
Shock Dec 20, 2020
Richards JE, Fedeles BT, Chow JH, et al. - Severely injured trauma patients are recommended to be administered tranexamic acid (TXA). TXA administration, admission fibrinolysis phenotypes, and clinical outcomes following traumatic injury are examined in this 2-year, single-center, retrospective investigation. Researchers here hypothesized that TXA was linked with increased multiple organ failure (MOF). The study population comprised 420 patients: 144/420 Shutdown (34.2%), 96/420 Physiologic (22.9%), and 180/410 Hyperfibrinolysis (42.9%). Findings revealed MOF in the fibrinolysis shutdown and hyperfibrinolysis phenotypes in correlation with administration of TXA following traumatic injury. As the observations do not confirm causation, further scientific evaluation is recommended with large, multicenter studies to further describe the impact of TXA in the resuscitation of severely injured trauma patients.
