Is there an association between parity and urinary incontinence in women during pregnancy and the first year postpartum?: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
Neurourology and Urodynamics Sep 24, 2021
Wuytack F, Moran P, Daly D, et al. - This systematic review of the literature demonstrates an association of increased parity with urinary incontinence (UI) in the first year postpartum, but conflicting results were obtained in studies on UI during pregnancy. The evidence was (very) uncertain.
Pubmed, CINAHL, Embase, the Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, MIDIRS, ClinicalTrials.gov were explored (inception-18 April 2020).
Of 16,643 records identified, 39 were included; 30 studies assessed UI during pregnancy and 12 evaluated UI postpartum.
Multiparity was related to UI at any point in the last pregnancy (odds ratio [OR]: 1.59) and in the third trimester when evaluated using ICIQ-SF (OR: 2.67).
This was not true when studies examined the UI point prevalence (OR: 2.48), or if they assessed the prevalence at one point in any trimester (OR: 1.09).
An association of multiparity with UI was evident at 3 months postpartum (OR: 2.03).
