Is there a survival advantage in diagnosing endometrial cancer in asymptomatic postmenopausal patients? An Israeli Gynecology Oncology Group study
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology May 31, 2018
Gemer O, et al. - Researchers compared the survival of endometrial cancer patients diagnosed in asymptomatic and bleeding post-menopausal patients. An Israeli Oncology Group retrospective multi-center study of 1,607 [233 asymptomatic patients and 1,374 presenting with postmenopausal bleeding (PMB)] post-menopausal patients with endometrial cancer was undertaken. Survival rates were not high with endometrial cancer diagnosed in asymptomatic post-menopausal women. In asymptomatic patients with ultrasonographically diagnosed endometrial polyps or thick endometrium, operative hysteroscopy/curettage procedures are rarely indicated. They find it reasonable to reserve these procedures for patients whose ultrasonographic findings demonstrate significant change over time.
