Is there a difference in the diagnostic outcomes of calcifications initially identified on synthetic tomosynthesis vs full-field digital mammography screening
European Journal of Radiology Oct 29, 2020
Zhu H, Polat D, Evans P, et al. - In this study, the outcomes of microcalcifications recalled on full-field digital (FFDM) and FFDM and combined tomosynthesis (Combo) were compared with synthetic (SM) screening mammograms. Between November 1, 2016-November 1, 2018, researchers examined medical records, radiology, and pathology reports of all patients found to have abnormal calcifications requiring further assessment on mammography screening and gathered patient demographics, calcification morphology and distribution, and mammography technique (SM, FFDM, or Combo). In this study, 699 calcifications were seen in in 596 women recalled. The data showed, that in comparison with FFDM/Combo, synthetic tomosynthesis screening results in a higher rate of false positive and unvalidated calcification recalls.
