Is the contralateral lesser trochanter a reliable reference for planning of total hip arthroplasty - A 3-dimensional analysis
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Mar 20, 2021
Hasler J, Hoch A, Fürnstahl P, et al. - The present study was performed to evaluate whether the contralateral lesser trochanter a reliable reference for the planning of total hip arthroplasty. Researchers examined side-to-side asymmetry of the lesser trochanter to the femoral head center (LTFHD), femoral length, femoral head diameter (FHD), and femoral ante torsion using Computer tomography-based surface models from 100 paired femora (50 cadavers). They developed univariate linear regression models to assess potential relationships between sides regarding LTFHD and FHD as well as a correlation of these parameters with each other. As per the findings, the LTFHD was found to be a reliable reference parameter for preoperative templating and intraoperative validation during THA with a high association between sides. It has been reported that 8 % of the investigated specimens revealed an LTFHD of more than 4mm, which should be anticipated during THA to avoid unsatisfiable outcomes.
