Is surgical antibiotic prophylaxis necessary for pediatric orchiopexy?
Journal of Pediatric Urology Feb 24, 2018
Rensing AJ, et al. - Authors laid a hypothesis that children who received surgical antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP) before orchiopexy had no reduction in surgical site infection (SSI) risk, but they had an increased risk of adverse events related to the antibiotic. The risk of postoperative SSI, readmissions, or hospital visits was not seen to be reduced by SAP, in cases who underwent orchiopexy. Significantly increased probability of perioperative allergic reaction was found in the patients who received SAP. The benefits of SAP were outweighed by its associated risks in children undergoing orchiopexy.
