Is screening for psychosocial risk factors associated with mental healthcare in older adults with cancer undergoing surgery?
Cancer Jan 29, 2020
Trevino KM, et al. - Among older adults suffering from cancer and undergoing elective surgery, researchers assessed the rates of preoperative psychosocial risk factors as well as the link between these risk factors and the provision of mental health services during hospitalization after surgery. The study sample comprised 1,211 patients (aged ≥ 75 years) who were referred to the geriatrics service at a comprehensive cancer center. Elective surgery was performed on patients. A follow-up of at least 30 days was performed following surgery. Findings revealed more likelihood for the receipt of mental health services post-surgery among distressed older adults and those with low levels of support preoperatively. Nevertheless, the receipt of inpatient postoperative mental healthcare was reported in less than one-third of these patients, suggesting that difficulties in translating screening into the provision of psychosocial services continue.
