Is sarcopenia a predictor of prognosis for patients undergoing radiotherapy for head and neck cancer?: A meta-analysis

Clinical Nutrition Sep 25, 2020

Findlay M, White K, Stapleton N, et al. - Among patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) receiving radiotherapy ± other treatment modality of curative intent, the prognostic effect of computed tomography (CT)-defined sarcopenia at the level of the third lumbar vertebra on overall survival was examined via this meta-analysis. Medline, Embase, CINAHL, AMED and PubMed were explored and 6,211 studies were identified and screened. Of these, seven studies satisfied the inclusion criteria with 1,059 pooled patients. Findings demonstrated an independent relation of CT-defined sarcopenia with decreased overall survival in patients suffering from HNC. Also, a clinically meaningful prognostic value of CT-defined sarcopenia was evident. To verify these observations and support execution of body composition evaluation as a clinically meaningful prognostic tool into practice, consensus concerning sarcopenia evaluation and definitions is warranted.
