Is prenatal testosterone‐estrogen balance associated with psoriasis?
Dermatologic Therapy Sep 12, 2020
Özer I, Temiz SA, Ataseven A, et al. - In view of the lack of understanding concerning the etiopathogenesis of psoriasis and the reported effects of hormones, particularly the sex steroids, on psoriasis, researchers here studied the second‐to‐fourth digit (2D:4D) ratio, which is an indicator of prenatal sex hormone balance, among a total of 369 individuals comprising 172 patients with psoriasis and 197 healthy volunteers. The 2D:4D ratio of both hands was lower among females in the psoriasis group vs those in the control group, with no significant difference. A higher 2D:4D ratio for both hands was reported for males in the psoriasis group compared with those in the control group. Further, a lower 2D:4D ratio was reported for male patients with type‐1 psoriasis vs those with type‐2 psoriasis. These results suggest an independent predisposing effect of an alteration of the estrogen‐testosterone balance due to prenatal testosterone activity for psoriasis in males.
