Is pelvic floor muscle contractility an important factor in anal incontinence?
Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology Sep 25, 2020
Mengistu Z, et al. - In view of the possible contribution of pelvic floor muscle contractility (PFMC) in anal continence (AI), researchers here examined correlations between clinical and sonographic measures of PFMC and AI symptoms, while controlling for sphincter and levator trauma. In this retrospective study, 1,383 women (Mean age: 55; mean BMI: 29) were included. Of these, 221 (16%) reported AI; the mean St. Mark's incontinence score (SMIS) was 12. Findings suggest no significant association of clinical and sonographic measures of PFMC with AI symptoms once EAS and levator trauma were controlled for.
