Is obstructive sleep apnea associated with ventricular tachycardia?: A retrospective study from the National Inpatient Sample and a literature review of the pathogenesis obstructive sleep apnea
Clinical Cardiology Oct 11, 2018
Salama A, et al. – Researchers investigated the association of increased ventricular arrhythmias with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) by using data from the National Inpatient Sample (2012-2014). They primarily focused on a potential diagnosis of ventricular tachycardia (VT) in the OSA population, assessed the rate of VF and cardiac arrest, and examined the association of VT with multiple potential confounding clinical variables by using multivariable analyses. The investigators found that OSA is associated with increased rates of ventricular tachyarrhythmia. No statistically significant odds ratio for cardiac arrest was observed in the OSA group. Unadjusted analyses showed that, in patients with OSA, comorbidities including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, CKD, acute coronary syndrome and heart failure were significantly more common.
