Is local or central adiposity more strongly associated with incident knee osteoarthritis than the body mass index in men or women?
Osteoarthritis and Cartilage May 18, 2018
Culvenor AG, et al. - Authors ascertained if central (abdominal) or peripheral (thigh) adiposity measures were related to incident radiographic knee osteoarthritis (RKOA) independent of body mass index (BMI) and if their association with RKOA was stronger than that of BMI. Nonetheless, there was a significant association of central (WHtR) and peripheral (SCF and IMF) adiposity with incident RKOA, Neither of these displayed a strong association with incident RKOA than BMI. To capture the elevated risk of RKOA associated with greater amounts of localised adiposity, the simple measure of BMI appeared sufficient.
