Is lactic acidosis predictive of outcomes in pediatric diabetic ketoacidosis?
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Nov 01, 2019
Cully M, et al. - The significance and prevalence of lactic acidosis were examined among children (age ≤ 21 years) presenting to the emergency department with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Researchers identified 92 patients with DKA resulting in 113 encounters who had their lactate level collected. As per the analysis, pediatric DKA patients commonly present to the emergency department with lactic acidosis. They emphasize not using serum lactate alone as an outcome predictor in pediatric DKA as no significant relationship was identified between the presence of lactic acidosis and pediatric intensive care unit length of stay, hospital length of stay, morbidity, and mortality. The patients presenting with lactic acidosis exhibited significantly higher initial glucose levels.
