Is focal active colitis of greater clinical significance in pediatric patients? A retrospective review of 68 cases with clinical correlation

Human Pathology Jan 26, 2018

Osmond A, et al. - Researchers sought to estimate the proportion of patients presenting with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Additionally, they investigated whether an amount or pattern of inflammation could predict IBD in pediatric patients. Data disclosed a 24% rate of IBD in pediatric patients with focal active colitis (FAC). The rate was 11%, similar to that reported rates in adults when patients with associated terminal ileal (TI) inflammation were excluded. A more aggressive follow-up was not needed for FAC in pediatric patients without terminal ileal inflammation.
