Is definitive plate fixation overlap with external fixator pin sites a risk factor for infection in pilon fractures?
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma Dec 24, 2020
Dombrowsky A, Abyar E, McGwin G, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, experts aspired to explore whether overlap of definitive plate fixation with external fixator pin sites is a risk factor for infection in pilon fractures. The sample consisted of 146 patients with pilon fractures treated between 2012 and 2018. Overall, deep wound infections developed in 22 (15%) patients. In patients with and without deep infection, there was no significant difference in the amount of overlap or distance from plate to pin site. In a staged treatment of high-energy pilon fractures, an overlap of definitive plate fixation with primary spanning external fixator pin sites is not a risk factor for deep infection development.
